The Marathon Bombings and Local TV: How The Affils Reacted

For Boston-area viewers, the Boston Marathon bombings were arguably the most important news story of the decade.  Each station provided extensive coverage of the situation, which broke down like this:

According to TVSpy, On Monday, WBZ was the first to report the news, cutting in at 2:57 with Paula Ebben and Bobby Sisk at the desk and Lisa Hughes on the scene via phone.  7News was the second, cutting in at 2:59 with Adam Williams in studio and Janet Wu reporting via phone.  NewsCenter5 broke in at 3:00 with Liz Brunner in studio and Sean Kelly on the phone.  Fox25 was last to cut in at 3:03, immediately having photog Matt Tomlin reporting via phone.

Other outlets on the scene also reported the bombings, with NECN quickly cutting in.  Reporters from the Globe, present at the finish line, witnessed the bombs detonate, while their RadioBDC outlet was broadcasting from the Forum restaurant, near the site of the second explosion.  DJ Adam-12 tweeted the news at 2:54 after witnessing the scene.

As the day unfolded, stories of families of reporters at the finish line began to show up on the air.  7’s Steve Cooper was running the marathon at the time of the explosion, which he details on the stations website.  Ditto for WBZ’s Paul Burton, whose wife was able to record video at the scene.

In a bizarre twist, Fox25’s sister station in Atlanta was the first station in the country to acquire images of the pressure cooker bomb.  For Fox25, this seemed to highlight the limitations of their network-owned position, as the station was already hampered by their limited coverage of the situation.

On Wednesday, WCVB was the first local affil to report that an arrest was imminent.  They were, however, receiving their information from CNN, which later recanted the statement.  Janet Wu, the source, maintained her position that an arrest was imminent.

By the time news broke of the shooting at MIT on Thursday night, every outlet in the country was at the ready.  7’s Adam Williams, reporting from the shootout scene in Watertown, was a shining star throughout the ordeal.  Trapped in the crossfire, Williams faithfully reported through the night into Friday.  In an on-air phone call with the station, Williams remarked, “I’ve never in my life been in a situation like this … clearly we’re not in a situation where police would want us, but we can’t get out right now.”  By the end of the day, a Facebook fan page had sprung up in support of Williams’ reporting throughout the situation, which now has close to 3,000 likes.

At one time on Friday, the btvn headquarters were outfitted with the streams of WBZ, NewsCenter5, and 7News.  As the details unfolded, the networks depended upon the local affils to provide coverage, with each station being simulcast nationwide on cable.  Each station provided exceptional coverage of the entire situation.  Everyone involved in reporting should be proud of their accomplishments, and though the events that led to it were deeply saddening, the work put in by all to resolve it should make everyone proud.

First on btvn: Mish Michaels Re-Appears on (Newly Graphic-ed) 5

Former WBZer Mish Michaels has reappeared on NewsCenter5.  The popular met joined the station today to report on Hurricane Sandy.

Michaels, a veteran of the Boston TV market, left channel 4 last year.  No word yet on her capacity at the station.

Talk 1200 Gutted: Rush to 680, Severin, et al Done

Hot on the heels of exercising their option in Howie Carr‘s contract, WRKO has announced that they will be picking up the Rush Limbaugh show from Clear Channel conserva-talker Talk 1200.

The announcement, made on Carr’s afternoon-drive show, makes note that the show will debut on 680 on August 21st from 12-3 p.m.  Michele McPhee, whose current show runs in that timeslot, will move to morning drive to co-host the show with Todd Feinberg.

Talk 1200, launched in 2010 as Rush Radio 1200, took over airing of Limbaugh’s show from WRKO and subsequently hired local talkers Jay Severin and Jeff Katz.  Both of them have been removed from the talker’s schedule, replaced by syndicated programming.

New btvn Forums Launch

The staff of btvn is proud to introduce the next generation of the btvn Forums.  Following the transition from the old MSN Groups page in 2009, a new forum was created at ProBoards.com.  With the move to the WordPress-based interface in 2011, the board was often cast aside and neglected.  After three-and-a-half years with the software, the decision was made to shutter the board altogether.  However, due to a recent resurgence in activity, coupled with the fact that stories were still being broken on the forum, a new board was created.

The new forum, based on the MyBB Forum software, is new from the ground-up.  The end result is an integrated website that can be accessed directly from the btvn.net site.  The right-hand column of the main blog now displays the latest forum posts, and the board updates itself automatically when a new post is made, creating one centralized place for information from both the btvn staff and contributors.

Accessible from btvn.net/forum, the new boards will supplant the old boards.btvn.net address.  As a result, unfortunately you will have to re-register with the site.  Registration is free and painless, and accounts are immediately activated.  Once everything gets back up to speed, conversation should continue uninterrupted.

Thanks for your patience and continued support as we continue to develop and evolve btvn.

John Daly Gone from NECN, Starts Political Blog

New England Cable News primary co-anchor John Daly has left the regional cable network, according to sources.

Daly, who joined the network in January 2011 after an extensive overhaul, anchored the evening newscast with Latoya Edwards.  He departed the station to launch his own blog, Informed-Not-Inflamed.com.

Prior to his tenure at NECN, Daly had been host of HGTV’s House Detectives, as well as reporting and anchoring in various capacities at various outlets throughout the country.

btvn Celebrates Ten Years

btvn turned ten years old in 2011. From its humble beginnings as the website pictured above to our present state as a news blog, btvn has been proud to bring you, the audience, the very latest in the Boston TV News world. To help celebrate this milestone, former managing editors Shawn Tempesta and Max Preston joined me for a discussion of our favorite stories, some reflection, as well as a preview to the future. WLVI Week Part Two: “Live from the News Station, This is 7 News.. at Ten”

December 19, 2006, marked the beginning of a new newscast on channel 56.  7 News at 10 on CW 56 debuted as a flashier, even more over-the-top version of 7’s style-over-substance broadcast.

Taking music and graphics from their Miami sister station, WSVN, 7 News took the tame and mature model of The Ten O’Clock News and threw it out, opting instead for stories and anchors that better fit the intended demographic for the then-new CW network.  In addition, nearly all references to the station’s new branding of CW56 were stripped, leaving the 7 News name as the only one present in nearly all circumstances.

7 News at 10 was supposed to be the market’s most contemporary newscast with high ratings from the coveted 18-34 demographic, but the way that things turned out went quite differently.  Hit the jump for the whole story.

New btvn Website Launches

Welcome to the fourth iteration of btvn. After spending time with the Weebly.com website, the decision was made to port the website over to a WordPress-based system. This will allow for increased freedom and ease of updating.

The redesigned website changes to a blog-based interface, rather than a traditional website. This, while less original than the outgoing setup, allows btvn to compete more effectively with the other news websites. In time, the new activity will spur btvn back to its position of prominence that it enjoyed throughout its nearly decade-long existence.

Another thing that you may haven noticed is that the name of this website has been tweaked to ‘btvn.’ This change arrived after using the ‘BTVN: Boston TV News’ guise for the duration of the website’s time on the internet. The simplified name will help to establish a unique identity for the site, rather than continue to compete with another website for recognition.

In addition to the overhauled website, btvn is proud to announce the addition of several new features to the website. These new columns will be bowing within the next few weeks and will provide hours of entertainment and knowledge about the
Boston television market. We’ll spare the details now, opting to launch them and leave the specifics to the review of our audience.  However, the one feature that has been released now is the revival of the image gallery from the old MSN Group-based website.  The gallery contains all of the images that were on the old site, albeit in a new format.  To access all ninety-seven images, simply click on ‘Image Gallery’ in the righthand menu.

Finally, you may have noticed that btvn has also begun to cover news from the neighboring markets. This will allow for increased coverage and knowledge about the areas surrounding our own market. It will also work to broaden the appeal of btvn and allow ourselves another outlet to branch out and be differentiated.

On behalf of the btvn staff, we hope you enjoy our new website!
