NBC Connecticut has added two new reporters to their growing roster. Audrey Washington and Todd Piro will be joining the station at the end of the month as reporters.
Washington comes from Providence NBC-affil WJAR, while Piro joins from KPSP in Palm Springs.
When asked by TVSpy, GM David Doebler remarked that he was “thrilled to add Todd and Audrey to our award-winning news team,” adding, “Their sharp journalism skills will add depth to our already strong news team in Connecticut, and will benefit viewers with enhanced coverage of important stories to our state,

Brittany Decker, the 2011 Miss Connecticut winner and winner of the MyTV9 Star contest, is going to be taking a crack at meteorology. As mentioned in a staff memo posted by our friends at The Laurel, Decker will begin the learning process to become a weather presenter with News8 and MyTV9. Check out the memo below:

Meanwhile, our own Brittany Decker has quietly been interested in pursuing a weather career – and a meteorology degree – for the past few months. With that in mind – and with us looking for someone – Brittany will begin working with our Meteorology team to “learn the ropes” of weather. At some point in the coming weeks, we’ll look at how she is progressing and weigh her potential to join the News8 team. I bring this up because you will be seeing her working with Gil, SteveM & Erica in the studio quite a bit over the next few weeks, and figured you might get curious J
We’ll continue to look at other applicants even as we monitor Brittany’s progress. Meteorology is a very involved science, and the ability to tell a good weather story is something only a precious few can do well. My goal here is to find the person who can best be a part of our newsroom and weather team, both now and down the road, and I think we’ll do that.

After a controversial job posting was reported on News8′s website nearly two weeks ago, news has emerged from WTNH that main anchor Sonia Baghdady and the station have signed a new contract.
According to TVSpy, the station’s main anchor signed a new contract following lengthy negotiations and swirling rumors about her departure, fueled in part by a job posting on the station’s website.
General Manager Mark Higgins told the New Haven Register that, “There was a rumor out there that the main anchors were going to leave,” adding, “it’s standard to post for a position… but it all worked out.” The job posting has since been removed.
NBC’s owned-and-operated station in Connecticut has invested in a new investigative team. Among the additions are reporters Chris Coffey and Sabina Kuriakose.
According to TVSpy, the ten-person unit will be helmed by former WVIT managing editor Sharon Butterworth, with support from current NBC Connecticut reporters Monica Buchanan and Jeff Stoecker.
Coffey joins channel 30 from KEYE in Austin, and Kuriakose comes to WVIT from YNN in New York.
In a statement, NBC heralded the creation of the unit as one that will be “focused on tracking down answers to issues and concerns for viewers of the state.” NBC has been investing heavily in their owned-and-operated stations since their acquisition by Comcast. Previously, NBC O&Os were among the first to make cuts and frequently let stations languish.
Tribune’s WTIC is expanding by one. FoxCT, the Connecticut station that has been growing a lot recently, has reportedly hired Jan Carabeo as a reporter for their morning newscast.
According to our friends at The Laurel, Carabeo joins the station from Syracuse, NY-station WSYR. Prior to that, she spent two years working at WIVT, the ABC-affil in Binghamton, NY.
Jan Carabeo’s first day on FoxCT is tomorrow morning.
Late last week, a job posting was created on wtnh.com for a news anchor. What can be assumed to be innocent enough, as many stations have jobs available, quickly turns interesting at the following line:
You’ll be anchoring most of your newscasts sitting next to this guy, Darren Kramer
News8′s primary anchor Sonia Baghdady is currently in the midst of contract negotiations. Sonia Baghdady co-anchors alongside Darren Kramer and has not terminated her relationship with the station. The job posting, in essence, is for a job that is already filled.
When TVSpy contacted News Director Erik Schrader, he informed them that Baghdady is still employed by the station but declined to comment about the job posting. Interestingly enough, at his prior stint at Pennsylvania CBS ABC-affil WNEP, a job posting was also created for a filled job during negotiations with then-morning anchor Mindi Ramsey. She later resigned from the station. No word yet on the status of Baghdady’s job.
Dr. Mel Goldstein, beloved meteorologist at Connecticut’s NewsChannel 8, has died. According to wtnh.com, Goldstein passed away at 66 after battling a sixteen-year long battle with Multiple myeloma.
“We not only lost a great journalist today, but a great humanitarian and close friend,” WTNH General Manager Mark Higgins said in an email sent to News 8 staff. Dr. Mel became the chief met at WTNH in 1986, and was on the staff there until his retirement in August 2011.
“I mainly want to be remembered as I am– honest, helpful to others, always around when needed. I can’t think of a better tribute than that, and it is something for which I will always be grateful,” remarked Dr. Mel upon his retirement, “I have worked hard in an area that I truly love, and I will likely continue in some weather venue until I no longer have the energy to do so.”
Fresh on the heels of Shannon Mulaire’s promotion to weekday morning anchor at Fox25, word has spread of a new hire for weekend evening newscasts.
According to our friends at The Laurel, Heather Hegedus, currently with Channel 3 Eyewitness News in Connecticut, has taken a job with the Dedham-based owned-and-operated station. She leaves WFSB after five years with the station.
7 News has brought in a fresh face to their weekend evening newscasts. 7 has finally replaced weekender Dave Kartunen, who left the station earlier this year. Sarah French, most recently a morning anchor at ex-’LVI sister station WTIC in Hartford, departed the Tribune outlet for Boston. This signals the end of months of speculation noted by our friends at The Laurel.
WTIC, the station that brought Connecticut such journalistic highlights such as “Big Boob Fridays,” is shuffling around their anchor lineups in the wake of her departure. Lead anchor Ericka Arias is headed to the morning shift, and current weekend anchor Alison Morris will take over duties at 10 and 11.
Still no word from ‘HDH brass about the anchor slot open at 4 and 5:30.
WBZ has hired a new face from Connecticut. Diana Perez has been with Hartford’s WVIT for the past thirty months and will make the move up to Boston very soon. Her last day at NBC Connecticut was last week.
An email to her colleagues from March 3rd was obtained by btvn:
“My last day is tomorrow. So, it is with a heavy heart that I write this e-mail.
I’d like to start by thanking each and everyone of you for all of your help over the last 2 1/2 years. The stories just don’t get done unless I have great guys and gals like you in my corner.
I’m off to the CBS station in Boston WBZ-TV. I’m excited and nervous at the same time.
This business is funny and there’s no telling where I might end up in a few years… so dont forget about me!”
Perez’s first day at channel 4 has not been disclosed yet.
