Tribune’s WTIC is expanding by one. FoxCT, the Connecticut station that has been growing a lot recently, has reportedly hired Jan Carabeo as a reporter for their morning newscast.
According to our friends at The Laurel, Carabeo joins the station from Syracuse, NY-station WSYR. Prior to that, she spent two years working at WIVT, the ABC-affil in Binghamton, NY.
Jan Carabeo’s first day on FoxCT is tomorrow morning.
Viewers of this morning’s Fox25 Morning News were greeted with a shock as a truck crashed into a pole outside of Gilette Stadium in the midst of a live report. Commentator Doug “V.B.” Goudie was quick to remark about the incident, which can be seen both above and after the jump in a reaction video. Late last week, a job posting was created on wtnh.com for a news anchor. What can be assumed to be innocent enough, as many stations have jobs available, quickly turns interesting at the following line:
You’ll be anchoring most of your newscasts sitting next to this guy, Darren Kramer
News8′s primary anchor Sonia Baghdady is currently in the midst of contract negotiations. Sonia Baghdady co-anchors alongside Darren Kramer and has not terminated her relationship with the station. The job posting, in essence, is for a job that is already filled.
When TVSpy contacted News Director Erik Schrader, he informed them that Baghdady is still employed by the station but declined to comment about the job posting. Interestingly enough, at his prior stint at Pennsylvania CBS ABC-affil WNEP, a job posting was also created for a filled job during negotiations with then-morning anchor Mindi Ramsey. She later resigned from the station. No word yet on the status of Baghdady’s job.
Sunbeam Television and DirecTV have failed to reach a carriage agreement. As of Friday at 12:00 a.m., both WHDH and WLVI were pulled from DirecTV lineups, replaced with a still image from DirecTV.
On both stations’ websites, viewers are greeted with a message regarding the conflict:
Sunbeam Television Corporation, the parent company of WHDH-TV Channel 7 and WLVI Channel 56, could not come to an agreement regarding a renewal of its carriage agreement with DirecTV. We are working hard to reach an agreement with DirecTV so that you can receive our signal again. Until we do you will not be able to view WHDH and WLVI on DirecTV, but you can receive Channel 7 and Channel 56 over the air and from other cable and satellite providers. We are seeking fair market value for the transmission of our signal. We have been able to negotiate deals with several other providers. We appreciate your viewership and hope to be back on DirecTV as soon as possible.
If you would like to voice your concerns to DirecTV, here’s the number to call. 1-800-531 5000.
Sunbeam had been looking for a 300 percent increase in retransmission fees, which has been a sticking point in negotiations for weeks. During that time, DirecTV has been able to come to agreements with dozens of other stations, including Hearst’s WCVB, which had been displaying a message to viewers with the possibility of removal.
Longtime Providence anchor Gene Valicenti has been removed from his usual spot on the 11 p.m. broadcast on NBC 10.
According to GoLocalProv, former Fox25er Dan Jaehnig has been promoted from 7p.m. anchor to co-anchor of the station’s flagship broadcast at 11.
Valicenti told TVSpy today that, “WJAR remains my home, and I want the best for the station I’ve been with for 20 years, We’ve had anchor combos switched before. I don’t know if it rises to a ‘shake-up’ since I still have a full plate, and a lot of work to do.”
The veteran anchor will still continue to solo anchor the station’s 5:30 broadcast, as well as co-anchor at 6. He also told TVSpy that he may be developing a franchise piece, similar to what Jonathan Hall had planned after being pulled from Today in New England.
Ex-Fox25er Kim Carrigan appeared on “Greater Boston” with Emily Rooney this week on WGBH. Max was kind enough to hit record and upload it to the btvn YouTube channel. The popular anchor was on hand to talk about her stint in Dedham and offer some commentary regarding the path the station has taken as of late. Definitely worth a look.
Fox25 has been spotted sporting some new weather graphics. The owned-and-operated station has switched vendors for their weather forecasts, adopting Andover-based WSI as their vendor of choice.
The new graphics debuted on Thursday during the 6p.m. show, and feature a faux 3D weather set that, according to one source inside the station, though the “set” isn’t 3D in the same context that channels 4 and 7 use 3D, it “could become that.”
According to our sources at the station, 25 now uses WSI’s TruVu MAX broadcasting system, which integrates the presentation with the station’s computer system as well as with MyFoxBoston.com. The new software will also allow for more varied slates due to its use of drag-and-drop. In addition, expect to see three-dimensional buildings and detailed maps which are currently in use by other stations in town.
With the switch to WSI comes the addition of their PRISM web forecasting feature. The station’s website will now be able to be updated more quickly because weather presentations can be created for use simultaneously on-air and on the site. However, according to Twitter, the station is still working on launching the web capabilities, which should be online sometime next week.
Another thought regarding the switch to WSI is the use of WSI-employed weather presenters to aid in staffing issues at the parent station. When WBZ used WSI as their vendor, Ellen Ferrara was frequently used on-air despite not being employed by CBS. With the recent departure of A.J. Burnett, one may infer that WSI’s staff could be used in the event of a short-staffing issue.
Dr. Mel Goldstein, beloved meteorologist at Connecticut’s NewsChannel 8, has died. According to wtnh.com, Goldstein passed away at 66 after battling a sixteen-year long battle with Multiple myeloma.
“We not only lost a great journalist today, but a great humanitarian and close friend,” WTNH General Manager Mark Higgins said in an email sent to News 8 staff. Dr. Mel became the chief met at WTNH in 1986, and was on the staff there until his retirement in August 2011.
“I mainly want to be remembered as I am– honest, helpful to others, always around when needed. I can’t think of a better tribute than that, and it is something for which I will always be grateful,” remarked Dr. Mel upon his retirement, “I have worked hard in an area that I truly love, and I will likely continue in some weather venue until I no longer have the energy to do so.”
Fresh on the heels of Shannon Mulaire’s promotion to weekday morning anchor at Fox25, word has spread of a new hire for weekend evening newscasts.
According to our friends at The Laurel, Heather Hegedus, currently with Channel 3 Eyewitness News in Connecticut, has taken a job with the Dedham-based owned-and-operated station. She leaves WFSB after five years with the station.
Kim Carrigan has officially been replaced at Fox25. According to her Facebook page, Shannon Mulaire has been promoted to weekday morning anchor. The popular newcomer to the station will be at the helm of the five hour broadcast, co-anchoring with Gene Levanchy.
Station brass are particularly excited about the move. Station V.P. Paul McGonagle remarks, “I’m delighted that Shannon is joining our morning team.” Also in his statement, McGonagle said, “Her New England roots and strong reporting skills are an asset to the station and we look forward to the new energy she’ll bring to FOX25 Morning News.”
Mulaire joined the station in 2010 as a reporter, then was quickly promoted to weekend anchor. This is the latest in a series of moves by the Fox owned-and-operated station, though no replacement has been named for popular ousted meteorologist A.J. Burnett.
