NECN Brings in Orlando Anchor for Expanded AM Presence

Erick Weber's current home at WKMG

Orlando morning anchor Erick Weber is headed to Boston, according to his Facebook page.  Currently a morning anchor at WKMG-TV, Local 6, Weber has accepted a position with NECN in their expanded morning news department.  “It is with both great excitement and great sadness that I am announcing I have accepted a morning news position in Boston” he says.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Weber will serve as the main anchor from 4:30am until 7:00am, and will act as a newsreader for the newly-launched The Morning Show on NECN.  His last day at WKMG will be March 2nd, and his first day at NECN has yet to be determined.

Revamped NECN Morning Show Debuts Monday

NECN’s revamped breakfast program, The Morning Show on NECN, debuts this Monday, January 17th.  The updated broadcast kicks off at 7am and features one of the most dramatic transformations of a newscast since Comcast Corp. gained majority control of the network after acquiring the network wholly from Hearst-Arglye Television (now Hearst Corp.) in June 2009.

The new morning program features two new anchors, Steve Aveson and Taryn Winter Brill, both of whom are no strangers to breakfast television, having reported for ABC’s Good Morning America.  They will replace Karen Swensen and Mike Nikitas, who relocated to New Orleans’ WWL-TV and was reassigned, respectively.  In addition to the new anchors, the program makes use of eight new contributors, ten new features, new graphics, and a new set.

This change comes at the height of a major shift for Boston media in the morning hours, with every major station fortifying their news in the morning.  This onslaught, however, was instigated by NECN with the expansion of their early-morning newscast to 4:30am just about a year ago.

BTVN 4.0 STARTS THIS WEEK: SO PLEASE WELCOME STEPHEN AND JOEY!

Hello All,

The time has come for me to say goodbye.

As of Monday, January 10th, I’ll be handing BTVN over to our new Managing Editor, Stephen; you’ll see him on our boards under stephenbtvn. Also joining the team will be Stephen’s friend Joey (board handle: outsideofboston), who will act as News Editor and Moderator of the newly-formatted site, which they’ll be bringing to you very soon. I will now be posting as just another member under MaxBTVN, except under emergencies if someone posts something so horrific that we could be sued or arrested for it, in which case you might see the BTVNadmin name pop up again on the boards. Stephen has very graciously offered me an informal position as a visiting contributor, but how (or even whether) that will take shape, I cannot yet officially say.

It’s been my immense pleasure and privilege to share these last eight years of Boston TV News with you, and I look forward to continuing to be a member of the BTVN community.

Please make Stephen and Joey feel welcome, and most importantly, please do what you can to help them make the new incarnation of the site a tremendous success!

It’s been fun – thanks,

Max
