2004 Gary Gillis Tribute

Right now, we’re looking for the thoughts of those who worked with or know former WHDH sports reporter Gary Gillis.

“First I want to say that I am a huge 7 fan, and have been watching it everyday since I was 10. When I found out that Gary Gillis had not been re-signed by 7 NEWS I was very surprised. Not re-signing Gillis was a HUGE mistake. They have made some risky moves before, but nothing like this. 7 needs to look more at their talent and what they bring to the station and to its audience. Gary Gillis is one of most well known sportscasters in the Boston area. He was a MAJOR contributor to the 7 Sports team. To let him go after 21 years is a move that I did not expect WHDH to make. If they wanted a three man sports team back in May then why did they hire Dave Briggs? They should have just kept Gary, he is so well known and respected throughout New England. WHDH needs to learn that younger is not better. Being young and having a pretty face does is not a fair trade for someone who is somewhat older and a lot more experienced. They need to think more before they make these desicions. The only question I have now is who is going to be taken to the boardroom next?”
